History of Habitat for Humanity of Prairie Lakes
On March 3, 2003, Bob Gandrud and Curt Larson first met to
discuss the possibility of a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Pope
County. Their consensus was that the possibility should be
pursued. A Housing Needs Assessment study was completed
showing a definite housing need. A meeting on April 23 was
held with George Myers, regional support manager, and invited
guests.
The first public informational meeting was held on Tuesday, June
17, 2003. From that meeting, interested persons formed a
steering committee. Operating teams were formed and an initial
board of directors.
On September 3, a certificate of incorporation was issued to
Habitat for Humanity of Prairie Lakes, Inc. Work on HfHI
application for affiliation continued through the winter months and
was submitted on February 14. On Tuesday, March 16, the board
met for the affiliation interview and was approved for application.
On May 1, 2004, HfH of Prairie Lakes (HfHPL) was accepted as their newest
affiliate. The first annual meeting was held on May 18, 2004
with officers and directors elected.
A groundbreaking ceremony for our first house was held on
Thursday, August 28, 2004 in Glenwood on 1st Ave. NE, between 5th &
6th St. The family selected was Norman and Jana Wegener, Jr.
and their three children. Excavation was begun shortly after
to begin construction on the house.
On Tuesday, September 7 our first paid staff person began her
duties; she is Tami Schmitz, office manager.
On January 27, 2006 we dedicated our 2nd House. Kristine,
Jay and Brendon Giersdorf are the proud owners and the house is
located in Starbuck.
In June, 2006 after two years of discussion, HfHPL expands its
geographical boundaries to include Stevens County. Stevens
County and Pope County are chapters under the affiliate umbrella.
Each has its own board and representation on the affiliate board.
Stevens County Chapter secured a lot in Alberta, selected a partner
family and builds in 2006. Pope County Chapter started its 3rd
house; this one in Glenwood.
