How Families Are Selected

Habitat for Humanity of Prairie Lakes (HfHPL) builds homes to meet the needs of families who are unable to afford decent housing. We are able to do this through the generosity and cooperation of many individuals, organizations, businesses, and towns around the County. Habitat utilizes volunteer skills and resources to build and rehabilitate homes with "partner families".

Partner Families are eligible families that become long-term partners with Habitat and help to build and pay for their own homes, allowing Habitat's financial resources to be recycled over and over to build more and more houses. Our goal is to eliminate substandard housing and homelessness, and to provide simple, decent and safe homes.

Habitat is Not a Give-away Program

A family selection committee chooses homeowners on the basis of need, ability to repay the mortgage and willingness to partner in the work. When homes are sold to partner families, HfHPL issues a no-interest loan over a fixed period of time. Mortgage terms discourage quick sale for profit.

A Habitat Partnership may be the solution for your family if you:

  • are currently living in inadequate housing, and
  • are willing to complete up to 300 hours (240 for a single parent) of "sweat-equity" on your new home, or on other Habitat projects, and
  • currently have low income but can make monthly payments of approximately $300 (mortgage loan payment, taxes, insurance), and
  • cannot qualify for conventional mortgage financing.
